A recent study conducted by a team of French scientists has found that refined carbohydrates can hurt cognitive function, even when consumed by young and healthy adults. Refined carbs are those which have been processed to remove the bran and germ from the grain, such as white flour or sugar.
The study was conducted over six weeks with two groups of participants aged between 18-25 years old. One group was given meals high in refined carbs while the other group received meals low in these types of foods. At regular intervals throughout this period, both groups were tested for their cognitive performance using standard memory tests and questionnaires about their general well-being.
The results showed that those who had eaten more refined carbohydrates performed worse on all tests than those who ate less – indicating poorer brain functioning overall due to consuming higher amounts of these processed foods. This suggests that eating too many refined carbs may be detrimental to our mental health even at a young age; something which should be taken into account when planning diets for ourselves or others around us!
