Apple is reportedly exploring the name “iPhone 17 Air” for its forthcoming slim iPhone model, according to industry sources. This device is expected to serve as a testing platform for future technologies, potentially paving the way for foldable devices.
The “Air” moniker aligns with Apple’s longstanding tradition of using this designation for the thinnest versions of its product lines, such as the MacBook Air and iPad Air.
The iPhone 17 Air is anticipated to be approximately 2 millimeters thinner than current iPhone models, with rumors suggesting a thickness between 5.5mm and 6.25mm. This would make it comparable to the M4 iPad Pro and even thinner than the iPhone 6.
In terms of technological innovations, the device could serve as a testing ground for Apple’s in-house cell modem, codenamed Sinope, following its debut in the iPhone SE. While this year’s iPhone lineup may introduce Apple-designed Wi-Fi and Bluetooth chips, it remains unclear if these will be included in the 17 Air.
The new model is expected to feature a 6.6-inch ProMotion OLED display with a 120Hz variable refresh rate, a feature previously exclusive to iPhone Pro models. Camera specifications are rumored to include a single 48-megapixel rear camera and a 24-megapixel front-facing camera.
Performance-wise, the iPhone 17 Air may be powered by Apple’s A19 chip and is likely to include 8GB of RAM to support Apple Intelligence AI features, similar to the iPhone SE 4.
