Apple Revisits Television Project Amid Smart Home Push
Apple, the tech giant known for its innovative products, is reportedly reconsidering the development of a full-fledged television set. This move comes as part of the company’s broader push into the smart home market, according to recent reports.
The idea of an Apple-branded television has been circulating for years, with the late Steve Jobs hinting at having solved the challenges of creating such a device before his passing in 2011. However, despite these suggestions, Apple has yet to release a television beyond its Apple TV set-top box.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman revealed that Apple had previously built full-scale television prototypes featuring large displays capable of functioning as touchscreen Macs or iPads. The project was ultimately halted due to the low-margin nature of the TV market, infrequent consumer purchases, and high production costs.
In 2019, Apple shifted its strategy, opting to expand its Apple TV app and streaming service to third-party televisions instead of manufacturing its own hardware. This approach allowed the company to enter the TV market without the associated risks of hardware production.
Now, as Apple develops various smart home devices, including a wall-mounted tablet, the possibility of a full-fledged Apple TV is once again on the table. However, market conditions and cost concerns remain potential obstacles for the project moving forward.
