Anysphere Acquires AI Coding Assistant Supermaven to Enhance Cursor Editor
Anysphere, the company behind the AI-powered code editor Cursor, has announced its acquisition of AI coding assistant Supermaven for an undisclosed sum. The move aims to bolster Cursor’s capabilities and accelerate product development in the rapidly growing AI coding tools market.
Michael Truell, CEO of Anysphere, revealed the acquisition in a blog post on Cursor’s website. Truell emphasized plans to enhance Cursor’s Tab AI model by incorporating Supermaven’s advanced features. While Supermaven’s existing plugins will continue to be maintained, the primary focus will shift towards integration with the Cursor platform.
The merger comes as Supermaven’s team had already begun developing their editor due to limitations with extension APIs. By joining forces, both companies aim to create a more powerful and user-friendly tool that leverages their combined resources and expertise.
Supermaven, founded by Jacob Jackson, who previously co-founded Tabnine and worked at OpenAI, had gained significant traction in the developer community. The AI coding platform, which boasted over 35,000 registered developers, featured a low-latency generative AI model called Babble and had secured $12 million in funding from notable investors.
While Supermaven was not actively seeking an exit, the opportunity to collaborate with Cursor presented a unique chance to co-design models and user interfaces for enhanced capabilities. This integration allows the Supermaven team to focus on designing the editor UI alongside the AI models, potentially leading to more seamless and effective coding assistance.
The acquisition reflects the growing interest and value in AI-powered coding tools. Anysphere has reportedly received unsolicited offers valuing the company at up to $2.5 billion, underscoring the high demand for such technologies. Industry projections estimate the AI coding tools market to reach $27.17 billion by 2032, highlighting the sector’s potential for significant growth.
Cursor has emerged as a popular option among AI-powered coding assistance startups, with the company reporting substantial revenue growth in recent months. This acquisition is expected to further solidify its position in the competitive landscape of AI-enhanced development tools.
As the integration progresses, developers and industry observers will be watching closely to see how the combined strengths of Cursor and Supermaven shape the future of AI-assisted coding.
