Amazon Unveils Alexa Plus: A Smarter, Subscription-Based Assistant
Amazon has announced a significant upgrade to its smart assistant with the introduction of Alexa Plus. The new version boasts expanded capabilities, including the ability to find concert tickets and order an Uber, aimed at facilitating more natural conversations with users.
In a departure from previous offerings, Amazon is introducing a subscription model for Alexa Plus. The company plans to launch a free early access program in late March 2025 for U.S. customers, initially limited to certain Echo Show devices. Users will receive notifications for access and must opt in to use the new features.
Following the early access period, Alexa Plus will be available for $19.99 per month. However, Amazon Prime members will enjoy the service at no additional cost, further enhancing the value of Prime membership.
Many of Alexa Plus’s new features are closely integrated with Amazon Music and Amazon Prime Video, reinforcing the benefits of Prime subscription for users seeking the full Alexa Plus experience.
Regarding device compatibility, Amazon states that Alexa Plus will work with nearly all existing Alexa devices. Early access will prioritize newer models such as Echo Show 8, 10, 15, and 21. However, older Echo devices, including Echo Tap and first-generation models, will not support the upgraded assistant. Notably, Amazon’s Astro robot will remain compatible only with the original Alexa.
The announcement came during an Amazon event that focused primarily on software enhancements and service integration, with no new hardware reveals.
As Amazon continues to evolve its smart home ecosystem, Alexa Plus represents a significant step towards more sophisticated AI assistants in everyday life.
