Alaska Airlines Embraces AI to Optimize Flight Routes and Reduce Delays
Alaska Airlines has partnered with Air Space Intelligence (ASI) to implement cutting-edge artificial intelligence technology in its flight route planning process. The collaboration, which began in 2018, aims to address the persistent challenge of flight delays in the airline industry.
The AI tool, known as the Flyways AI Platform, analyzes vast amounts of data, including historical flight traffic and predicted weather patterns, to suggest optimal routes for aircraft. This initiative is part of the broader “CXO AI Playbook,” showcasing how businesses are integrating AI into their operations to improve efficiency and performance.
Pasha Saleh, head of corporate development at Alaska Airlines, spearheaded the partnership with ASI. The collaboration took shape after Phillip Buckendorf, CEO of Air Space Intelligence, visited Alaska Airlines’ operations center and pivoted his company’s focus from self-driving cars to airline routing.
The development of the Flyways AI Platform involved a comprehensive learning phase, during which ASI staff observed airline dispatchers to understand their processes. This approach ensured that the AI tool would complement human expertise rather than replace it.
Flyways AI Platform connects to multiple data sources and processes information through APIs to generate route suggestions. The system considers various factors, including military airspace restrictions and wind speeds, to provide comprehensive routing options.
Early results of the AI implementation have been promising. Alaska Airlines’ dispatchers currently accept 23% of Flyways’ route suggestions, contributing to a significant reduction in fuel consumption. In 2023 alone, the airline reported saving over 1.2 million gallons of fuel through the use of AI-optimized routes.
The success of this initiative aligns with Alaska Airlines’ goal to become the most fuel-efficient airline by 2025. The carrier has also seen improvements in its on-time performance rankings.
The partnership’s success has led to substantial growth for Air Space Intelligence, which has secured contracts with the US Air Force and received significant funding to further develop its AI technology.
As the airline industry continues to face challenges with delays and efficiency, Alaska Airlines’ adoption of AI for route planning represents a significant step forward in leveraging technology to improve operations and customer experience.
