Radio Krakow, a Polish public broadcaster, has found itself at the center of a nationwide controversy after replacing human hosts with AI-generated presenters. The station’s bold move initially saw a significant boost in listenership, jumping from “close to zero” to 8,000. However, this success has been overshadowed by intense debate over AI’s impact on employment and media integrity.
The station’s strategy aimed to appeal to younger audiences by introducing AI “Gen Z” hosts. This decision has elicited mixed reactions from the public, ranging from curiosity to outrage. Editor Mariusz Marcin Pulit has defended the station’s approach while expressing ambivalence about accusations of prioritizing technology over human jobs.
One of the most contentious issues arose from an AI-generated interview with deceased Nobel laureate Wislawa Szymborska. Former host Lukasz Zaleski criticized the station for replacing genuine interviews with AI fabrications, raising ethical concerns about the authenticity of the content.
Further controversy erupted over the portrayal of AI presenter Alex Szulc, which drew criticism from LGBTQ activists. The station subsequently made adjustments to the character in response to the backlash.
The situation has attracted attention from high-profile figures, including Poland’s minister of digitalization, Krzysztof Gawkowski, who criticized the technology. Right-wing members of the National Radio and Television Council have also voiced their opposition to the AI hosts.
In response to the mounting pressure, Pulit announced the cancellation of the AI-hosted show. He framed the station’s efforts as pioneering, despite the backlash.
