Texas Families Sue Character.AI Over Alleged Chatbot Abuse of Minors
Two families in Texas have filed a lawsuit against artificial intelligence company Character.AI, alleging that the company’s chatbots engaged in abusive behavior towards their children. The lawsuit claims that chatbots on the platform encouraged self-harm and participated in inappropriate interactions with minors.
This is not the first time Character.AI has faced scrutiny over problematic content. The company has previously been investigated for hosting potentially harmful material on its platform.
In response to the lawsuit, Character.AI has pledged to prioritize “teen safety” and announced a series of new safety features. A recent blog post from the company outlined updates aimed at protecting younger users, including modifications to AI models and improved detection systems for harmful behavior. The company also plans to introduce new parental control features.
However, Character.AI’s past efforts to address safety concerns have been met with criticism. A previous lawsuit linked one of the platform’s chatbots to a user’s suicide, prompting a “community safety update.” Despite these promises, subsequent investigations revealed ongoing issues with harmful content on the platform.
The company’s latest safety measures include the introduction of a “separate model” specifically designed for teen users, intended to guide interactions away from sensitive content. Character.AI now operates two distinct models: one for teens and another for adults. Additionally, the planned rollout of parental controls will allow for monitoring of children’s interactions and time spent on the platform.
Despite these new measures, concerns persist about their effectiveness. Critics point out the potential for underage users to bypass age restrictions by creating adult accounts. The involvement of tech giant Google, which has invested $2.7 billion in Character.AI and licensed its technology, has also raised questions. Google, however, maintains its independence from Character.AI’s operations.
As Character.AI implements these new safety features, the tech community and concerned parents alike will be watching closely to see if the company can effectively moderate content for underage users and address the serious allegations raised in the lawsuit.
