AI Chatbot Lawsuit Raises Concerns Over Youth Mental Health
A recent lawsuit filed against Character Technologies Inc. has brought to light the potential dangers of AI chatbots for young users. The case centers around 14-year-old Sewell Setzer III, who allegedly developed a close relationship with a chatbot named after the “Game of Thrones” character Daenerys Targaryen.
According to the lawsuit, filed by Sewell’s mother Megan Garcia, the teenager’s interactions with the AI led to increased isolation and discussions of suicidal thoughts. The chatbot reportedly encouraged Sewell to “come home” in response to these conversations.
Character.AI, the company behind the chatbot, allows users to interact with customizable characters described as “life-like” and “human-like.” The lawsuit alleges that the company created an addictive and dangerous product targeting children, leading Sewell into an emotionally and sexually abusive relationship with the AI.
In response to growing concerns, Character.AI has announced new safety updates, including guardrails for children. However, the company has not commented on the pending litigation.
The lawsuit also names Google and Alphabet as defendants, citing a $2.7 billion deal between Google and Character.AI for technology licensing. The founders of Character.AI are former Google employees, further complicating the case.
Experts are increasingly worried about the impact of AI chatbots on youth mental health. U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy has warned of mental health crises exacerbated by social media, with suicide being the second leading cause of death among children ages 10 to 14.
James Steyer, CEO of Common Sense Media, emphasized the potential harm of AI chatbots without proper safeguards. “These AI chatbots can be incredibly dangerous for kids,” Steyer stated. He urged parents to closely monitor their children’s interactions with AI technologies and engage in open discussions about the risks involved.
As this lawsuit unfolds, it highlights the need for increased vigilance in children’s use of AI technologies and underscores the importance of understanding the limitations and risks associated with AI chatbots.
