Acura Unveils New Electric SUV Concept at Monterey Car Week
Acura is set to make waves at Monterey Car Week with the debut of its latest electric vehicle concept. The luxury automaker is showcasing a crossover SUV that boasts a distinctive boat-like front end and a sporty rear, reminiscent of the Precision EV concept revealed in 2022.
This new concept is built on an all-new electric vehicle platform developed by Honda, Acura’s parent company. It represents a significant step towards Acura’s electric future, with plans for production slated for next year at Honda’s newly established “EV hub” in Ohio.
The concept vehicle is described as “dynamically styled” with a “powerful, athletic stance.” It features a long wheelbase, prominent wheel arches, and eye-catching 23-inch rims with variable spacing spokes. The side profile draws comparisons to the Ford Mustang Mach-E, but with a more pronounced sport hatch design.
At the front, the concept sports aggressive hood and side vents, coupled with squinty headlights that give it an imposing presence. This design language seems to signal Acura’s intent to maintain a sporty image even as it transitions to electric powertrains.
While Acura’s current EV offering is limited to the ZDX, which utilizes GM’s Ultium EV platform, this new concept represents a shift towards in-house developed electric technology.
In related news, Shinji Aoyama, Honda’s global executive VP, hinted at a new “NSX-type” electric sports car in development, potentially arriving in 2027 or 2028. This suggests that Acura is not only focusing on practical EVs but also on maintaining its performance car legacy in the electric era.
Meanwhile, Honda is working on its own EV series called Honda Zero, which includes a uniquely shaped concept and a larger “Space-Hub” design, further emphasizing the company’s commitment to electrification across its brands.
As the automotive industry continues its shift towards electric vehicles, Acura’s latest concept demonstrates the brand’s determination to stay at the forefront of this evolution, blending luxury, performance, and sustainability in its future offerings.
