The Biden Administration has announced new proposed auto emissions rules in a bid to accelerate the transition to electric vehicles. The US government is aiming for two-thirds of all new cars sold in the country by 2032 to be electric, with an overall goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions from automobiles by 50%.
The proposed regulations would require automakers to reduce their fleet-wide average carbon dioxide emission levels and increase fuel economy standards. This could lead manufacturers towards producing more efficient gasoline and diesel engines as well as hybrid and battery electric vehicles. Automakers will also have incentives available, such as credits for selling zero-emission models or those with higher efficiency ratings than required under the rule.
These changes signal a shift away from traditional combustion engine vehicles, which are major contributors to air pollution worldwide, towards cleaner alternatives that produce fewer pollutants in our atmosphere. It’s hoped this move will help reduce global warming while providing consumers with more options when it comes time to buy a car – whether they choose an EV or one powered by alternative fuels such as hydrogen or biodiesel instead of petrol or diesel fuel sources.
