Google Expands AI Capabilities in Search with New ‘AI Mode’
Google has announced a significant expansion of its AI-powered search features, introducing an experimental “AI Mode” that leverages the company’s latest AI model, Gemini 2.0. This new feature, available to subscribers of the “Google One AI Premium” plan, represents a shift in how users interact with search results.
The AI Mode, accessible through a dedicated tab in the Google app, replaces traditional search results with AI-generated responses. Unlike standard search pages, users will not see web links when scrolling, instead receiving content entirely produced by AI.
This development puts Google in direct competition with other AI search tools, such as those developed by OpenAI. However, Google’s dominant position in the search market means its AI capabilities will be accessible to a significantly larger user base.
Gemini 2.0, the AI model powering these new features, employs a “query fan-out” technique to provide more comprehensive responses. This method involves conducting multiple related searches across various subtopics and data sources to generate thorough answers to complex queries, including those involving math and coding.
While Google aims to provide AI-powered responses whenever possible, the system is designed to default to traditional web search results if the AI’s confidence in its ability to provide helpful information is low.
The existing AI Overviews feature, known for its ad-heavy content and mixed-quality information, will remain in place and will now be visible to users who are not signed in. This expansion of AI features aligns with growing user demand for AI-generated search responses and reflects a broader trend of integrating AI into everyday digital tools.
As Google continues to refine its AI offerings, the tech industry watches closely to see how these advancements will shape the future of online search and information retrieval.
