Google Tests New “AI Mode” to Enhance Search Experience
Google is currently testing a new “AI Mode” on its search page, aiming to provide users with a more diverse and comprehensive set of results compared to its existing AI Overviews. This feature represents a significant step in integrating artificial intelligence more deeply into Google’s core search experience.
The AI Mode offers users a full page of AI-generated results in response to their queries, accessible through a new tab on the Google search page. Powered by a custom version of the Gemini 2.0 model, the feature leverages advanced reasoning and multimodal AI capabilities. For instance, AI Mode can create comparison tables for products like sleep trackers, offering users a more detailed and nuanced search experience.
Initially, the testing phase is limited to Google One AI Premium subscribers in the United States, with a select group of “trusted testers” granted early access. Google has not yet announced a specific timeline for a broader rollout of the feature.
This development signals Google’s ongoing efforts to integrate AI technology into its search functionality without disrupting its primary search business. AI Mode serves as a bridge between classic search and the Gemini chatbot, allowing users to ask more nuanced questions and receive comprehensive AI-generated responses.
The new feature boasts several functionalities, including the ability to answer queries directly and display source links. It also incorporates shopping data and supports text, voice, and image queries. However, Google has implemented certain limitations, such as only activating the feature when there is high confidence in the results. Some advanced capabilities, like comparison tables, will be introduced gradually.
Alongside AI Mode, Google recently launched the Gemini 2.0 model for AI Overviews, which enhances results for complex searches, including coding and advanced mathematics.
As Google continues to refine and expand its AI-powered search capabilities, users can expect a more sophisticated and tailored search experience in the future.
