Sources familiar with the project reveal that data annotators at xAI have been engaged in the development of DeepSearch since late 2023. These annotators are utilizing a specialized tool to track internet searches, which will be used to train the AI model. However, the current stage of development and any plans for public release remain unclear.

In its present form, Grok is capable of conducting basic factual research and providing citation links. The proposed DeepSearch tool would significantly expand these capabilities, potentially positioning xAI as a formidable competitor in the AI research assistant market.

This development comes as other major players in the AI field have already launched similar products. Google’s “Deep Research” feature, available to Gemini Advanced subscribers, functions as an AI research assistant capable of swiftly executing multistep research tasks. As xAI continues to evolve its offerings, the company is also ramping up its hiring efforts.
