Apple Releases iOS 18.3, Temporarily Disables AI Notification Summaries
Apple has rolled out iOS 18.3, introducing significant changes to its AI-powered notification summary feature on iPhones. In a notable move, the tech giant has temporarily disabled notification summaries for news and entertainment applications.
This decision comes in the wake of a BBC report that highlighted instances of incorrect summarization of its headlines. Apple has assured users that they will be notified when the feature becomes available again.
In a parallel development, Apple Intelligence is now enabled by default on supported devices. This includes iPhone 15 Pro and later models, iPads and Macs with Apple Silicon M1 chip or later, and the latest iPad mini.
iOS 18.3 brings several new features to enhance user experience. Visual Intelligence can now add events to the Calendar app from posters or flyers, and users can easily identify plants and animals using their device’s camera.
The macOS 15.3 update, released alongside iOS 18.3, introduces support for Genmoji and implements similar changes to notification summaries as seen in the iOS update.
To improve user interaction with notification summaries, Apple has implemented visual enhancements. Summaries will now be displayed in italicized text for easy differentiation. Additionally, new settings allow users to manage notification summaries directly from the lock screen.
Users can download iOS 18.3 by navigating to Settings > General > Software Update on their devices. As always, it is recommended to back up important data before proceeding with the update.
