Apple Releases iOS 18.3, Temporarily Disables AI Summaries for News Apps
Apple has rolled out iOS 18.3, introducing a range of new features while temporarily disabling AI-generated notification summaries for news and entertainment applications. This move comes in response to criticism from the BBC regarding the accuracy of these summaries.
The tech giant has informed users that the feature will be reinstated in a future update, once improvements have been made. Despite this setback, iOS 18.3 brings several enhancements to the user experience.
Apple Intelligence, a key feature of the update, is now activated by default on supported devices. These include iPhone 15 Pro and later models, iPads and Macs with Apple Silicon M1 chip or newer, and the latest iPad mini.
Visual Intelligence capabilities have been expanded in this release. Users can now add events to their Calendar app directly from images such as posters or flyers. Additionally, the update introduces an improved feature for identifying plants and animals with ease.
Parallel to iOS 18.3, Apple has also launched macOS 15.3. This update introduces Genmoji support and implements similar changes to notification summaries as seen in the iOS update.
Notification summaries across both operating systems will now appear in italicized text, making them easier to distinguish. Users will also find new settings for managing these summaries directly from the lock screen.
To install iOS 18.3, users can navigate to Settings > General > Software Update on their devices. As always, it is recommended to back up important data before proceeding with the update.
