Ayaneo Unveils Modular Handheld PC with Competitive Pricing
Ayaneo, known for its boutique handheld PCs, has announced the Ayaneo 3, a modular device that aims to compete with established players like the Steam Deck. Priced at $900, the Ayaneo 3 offers a range of features that may appeal to gaming enthusiasts and tech aficionados alike.
The device boasts two USB4 ports, OcuLink compatibility, and RGB-ringed Hall effect joysticks. Its standout feature is the modular design, which Ayaneo claims makes it “the world’s first modular handheld.” Users can purchase a “Magic Module” kit for $139, offering six interchangeable modules for customized ergonomics.
The base $900 model includes a Ryzen 8840U processor, 16GB of RAM, and 512GB of storage. Customers can choose between OLED and IPS displays, each with impressive specifications. The OLED screen offers 1080p resolution, 144Hz refresh rate, HDR support, and 800 nits brightness, surpassing the Steam Deck OLED in some aspects. The IPS option provides a 120Hz refresh rate with variable refresh rate support.
Connectivity options are robust, with USB4 ports supporting 65W PD charging and an Oculink port for eGPU compatibility. The device also supports full-length M.2 2280 SSDs for storage upgrades and features a dedicated hardware mode switch for controller and virtual keyboard modes.
However, potential buyers should consider some concerns. The electronic latching system for modules requires a software button for release, which may raise durability questions. Additionally, the 49-watt-hour battery capacity falls short compared to competitors, potentially impacting battery life.
Ayaneo’s history with crowdfunded products and delivery timelines adds an element of uncertainty to the project. The ambitious nature of the Ayaneo 3 may also present risks for early adopters.
The Ayaneo 3 is currently available for crowdfunding on Indiegogo, with shipping expected to begin at the end of April. Interested consumers are advised to carefully review the pricing and features before making a purchase decision.
