Microsoft Tests AI-Powered Windows Search in Latest Insider Build
Microsoft has begun testing an innovative AI-powered Windows search feature in a new developer channel built for Windows 11 Insider testers. This feature, initially announced in October, leverages semantic indexing technology to enable users to search for local files using natural language queries.
The new search functionality requires a Copilot Plus PC to operate and can work offline, thanks to the NPU chips integrated into these devices. Currently, the feature is limited to searching Windows settings and files in JPEG, PNG, PDF, TXT, and XLS formats.
The AI-enhanced search applies to search boxes in Settings, File Explorer, and the taskbar. Users have the option to customize which file locations are indexed through the Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows menu. An “Enhanced” option is also available for those who wish to index their entire machine.
Microsoft plans to expand the feature’s capabilities in the future, potentially including cloud data such as OneDrive in search results.
The rollout of this new search functionality is gradual, initially targeting Windows Insiders using Snapdragon-powered Copilot+ PCs. Microsoft has indicated that support for Intel and AMD Copilot Plus computers will follow. The feature is currently available in multiple languages, including Chinese, English, French, German, Japanese, and Spanish.
In addition to the AI search feature, the new build introduces AI writing tools via Click to Do. Users can access context-sensitive menus by holding the Windows key and left-clicking. A “Refine” option under the Rewrite menu offers grammar correction for selected text blocks.
As Microsoft continues to integrate AI capabilities into its operating system, these new features represent a significant step towards more intuitive and efficient user experiences in Windows 11.
