Valve Reportedly Developing New Steam Controller and VR Gamepad
Valve, the company behind the popular Steam gaming platform, is reportedly in the late stages of developing two new gaming controllers, according to recent reports from industry insiders. The first, codenamed “Ibex,” is said to be a successor to the original Steam Controller, while the second, known as “Roy,” is designed for use with a rumored standalone VR headset.
The Steam Controller 2, or “Ibex,” is reportedly being prepared for mass production, suggesting that its development is nearing completion. This new iteration is expected to build upon the customizable features of its predecessor while potentially incorporating design elements from Valve’s successful Steam Deck handheld PC.
Simultaneously, Valve is working on the “Roy” controller, which is intended to complement the company’s rumored standalone VR headset, codenamed “Deckard.” This VR-focused controller is said to feature a D-pad, bumpers, grip buttons, triggers, ABXY buttons, a system button, and a strap. Sources indicate that the “Roy” controller may also function as a traditional gamepad, expanding its versatility beyond VR applications.
Industry speculation suggests that Valve may release the Deckard headset alongside the “Roy” controllers, potentially offering a wireless alternative to their current Valve Index VR system. There are also rumors that the Deckard headset may incorporate an Arm chip, though details remain unconfirmed.
While Valve has not officially announced these developments, the company is known for keeping products under wraps until they are near completion. In a related move, Valve has partnered with Hori to release an officially licensed Steam gamepad in the US, though this is not considered a direct successor to the original Steam Controller.
As anticipation builds for these potential new gaming peripherals, enthusiasts and industry watchers alike are eager for official confirmation from Valve regarding the “Ibex” and “Roy” controllers, as well as the rumored Deckard VR headset.
