Valve Celebrates Half-Life 2’s 20th Anniversary with Massive Update

Valve Corporation has unveiled a major update for Half-Life 2, marking the iconic game’s 20th anniversary. The update, available now on Steam, introduces a host of new features and improvements to the critically acclaimed first-person shooter.

One of the most significant additions is the integration of Steam Workshop support directly within the game, allowing players to access and enable mods without leaving the game environment. This feature can be found in the newly added Extras menu.

The anniversary update also includes substantial improvements to Half-Life 2’s maps, addressing longstanding bugs and restoring previously lost content. Graphics enhancements include improved lightmap resolution and fog quality, with an option for players to experience the original launch day blood and fire effects.

In a move that adds significant value for players, Valve has bundled the Episode One and Episode Two expansions with the base game. These expansions are now accessible from the main menu and will automatically progress to the next chapter upon completion.

To commemorate the milestone, Valve is offering Half-Life 2 for free on Steam until November 18th, after which it will be available for $9.99. The company has also added 3.5 hours of new developer commentary and released a free 20th anniversary documentary on YouTube, offering insights into the game’s tumultuous development process.

The update extends to improved gamepad controls, mirroring those introduced in the recent Half-Life 1 anniversary update. New graphics settings have also been implemented, providing players with more options to tailor their visual experience.
