A recent study has brought to light a concerning global health issue: over half of the world’s population lacks essential micronutrients such as calcium, iron, and vitamins C and E. In response to these findings, California gastroenterologist Dr. Saurabh Sethi has identified five key signs that may indicate nutritional deficiencies.
Dr. Sethi points to brittle nails, eyelid twitching, joint clicking, premature greying of hair, and easy bruising as potential indicators of various nutritional shortfalls.
Brittle nails, according to Dr. Sethi, may suggest a deficiency in protein and iron. Nails are primarily composed of keratin, requiring adequate protein intake for strength. The recommended protein intake is 0.8 grams per kilogram of body weight. Iron-rich foods such as red meat, poultry, fish, spinach, beans, whole grains, and eggs can help address this issue.
Eyelid twitching, medically known as myokymia, is often linked to magnesium deficiency. Magnesium plays a crucial role in nerve impulse transmission. However, Dr. Sethi advises consulting a doctor before starting any magnesium supplementation.
Clicking of the joints, while common with aging, may indicate a deficiency in vitamin D3 or calcium. These nutrients are vital for bone strength, with vitamin D aiding calcium absorption. Milk, sardines, and leafy greens are excellent sources of both calcium and vitamin D.
Premature greying of hair, occurring before age 20 in white individuals and before 30 in African Americans, could be linked to vitamin B12 or copper deficiencies. Vitamin B12 is important for red blood cell production and oxygen transport, while copper is essential for melanin production.
Lastly, bruising easily can be attributed to various factors, including vitamin deficiencies. Specifically, a lack of vitamin C can affect collagen formation, while vitamin K1 deficiency impacts blood clotting.
As these nutritional deficiencies continue to affect a significant portion of the global population, awareness of these signs could prove crucial in identifying and addressing potential health issues.
