Pony AI, Backed by Toyota, Aims for U.S. Stock Market Debut
Pony AI, an autonomous vehicle company with significant backing from Toyota, is set to go public on the U.S. stock market following Beijing’s decision to lift restrictions on offshore capital raising. The company, which was valued at $8.5 billion in 2022, has adjusted its IPO valuation to $4 billion, reflecting current market conditions.
In 2023, Pony AI secured additional funding from Saudi Arabia’s NEOM and Chinese venture capital firm GAC Capital, bolstering its financial position ahead of the public offering.
The company’s operations currently include a fleet of 190 robotrucks in Beijing and Guangzhou, alongside over 250 robotaxis across four major Chinese cities. Pony AI has achieved the milestone of charging fares in several locations and operates fully driverless services in Guangzhou and Shenzhen.
With over 20 million autonomous driving miles logged, including 2.4 million miles without human intervention, Pony AI has demonstrated significant progress in its technology. The company’s robotruck division has attracted 57 corporate customers, with the top three accounting for 62.8% of total revenues.
Financial results show a mixed picture, with gross profits of $32 million in 2022 and $17 million in 2023. However, substantial R&D expenses have led to losses exceeding $270 million. The company’s workforce is heavily skewed towards research and development, with 44% of employees in this sector.
Despite these challenges, Pony AI reported nearly doubled revenue of $24.7 million in the first half of 2024 compared to the same period last year. The company anticipates continued revenue growth but warns that costs are unlikely to decrease in the near term.
The IPO filing includes an extensive 60-page risk factor section, highlighting concerns such as a shortage of staff familiar with U.S. GAAP and potential regulatory challenges in China. Additionally, the company faces hurdles in the U.S. market, where its operations contributed less than 1% of total revenues in recent periods.
Notwithstanding these risks, Pony AI presents an optimistic outlook on its technology’s capabilities, describing its autonomous vehicles as achieving advancements previously confined to science fiction.
As Pony AI prepares for its public debut, investors and industry observers will be closely watching to see how this ambitious autonomous vehicle company fares in the competitive U.S. stock market.
