In a startling development, hackers have gained control of camera-equipped robot vacuums across the United States, sparking serious privacy and security concerns. The affected models include Ecovacs’ Deebot X2, with reports of strange behaviors emerging from Los Angeles to El Paso, Texas.

One notable incident involved Minnesota lawyer Daniel Swenson, whose vacuum began yelling racial slurs. Swenson initially believed the device was malfunctioning due to unusual sounds. However, he soon discovered unauthorized access to the vacuum’s camera and remote control features.

“I reset the password, but the vacuum continued to behave erratically and yell obscenities,” Swenson reported. Concerned about privacy, particularly given the vacuum’s proximity to the family’s master bathroom, Swenson ultimately decided to turn off the device permanently.

This incident is not isolated. Ecovacs, the manufacturer of the affected vacuums, has been warned multiple times about vulnerabilities in their systems. Security experts caution that hackers could potentially access private footage and audio through these devices.

White hat hackers had previously identified vulnerabilities in Ecovacs’ Deebots. They discovered that user PIN codes were stored insecurely in the app, allowing easy access to the devices. Hacker Daniel Giese demonstrated the ease with which these vacuums could be compromised.

Ecovacs claims to have resolved the vulnerability, but Giese indicates that security holes still exist. This raises concerns about ongoing unauthorized access and misuse of these smart home devices.

The incident highlights the critical importance of cybersecurity in consumer electronics. As smart home devices become increasingly prevalent, users are faced with growing concerns over privacy and safety.
