North Carolina’s Medicaid Expansion Surpasses 400,000 Enrollments: A Win for Healthcare Access

North Carolina’s Medicaid expansion for low-income adults is making waves, with over 400,000 individuals already enrolled in the program’s first four months. Governor Roy Cooper proudly announced this significant milestone, highlighting the positive impact the initiative has had on the state’s residents. The expansion, which offers full health benefits to adults aged 19-64 who don’t qualify for traditional Medicaid, kicked off on December 1st, following the completion of necessary legislative steps mandated by the Affordable Care Act.

On the very first day of enrollment, a whopping 273,000 individuals, primarily those who had previously only received Medicaid for family-planning services, were already covered. The rapid pace of enrollment, averaging more than 1,000 individuals per day, reflects the pressing need for accessible healthcare in North Carolina. Governor Cooper emphasized the transformative nature of Medicaid expansion, expressing his commitment to enrolling even more eligible residents in the program.

The Department of Health and Human Services in North Carolina anticipates that enrollment numbers will continue to climb, projecting to reach 600,000 within the next two years. The federal government’s substantial contribution of 90% of the expansion’s cost, supplemented by a modest increase in hospital assessments, underscores the financial viability and sustainability of the initiative.
