Irish SMEs have had a record-breaking first quarter of 2021, raising €502 million in funding. This is largely due to the success of one major deal by a Cork-based company, which raised an impressive sum and put Irish SMEs firmly on the map for venture capitalists.
However, not all smaller firms were so lucky as the value of deals in the €1m to €3m range fell drastically from over 30 million last year to just 10 million this quarter. This suggests that while some companies are thriving with access to capital resources, others are struggling without it.
This could be down to several factors, such as lack of investor confidence or difficulty accessing funds during Covid restrictions; both issues that can be addressed with government support and policy changes going forward into 2022 and beyond. It’s also important for investors themselves to look at more diverse opportunities within Ireland’s small business sector – something which should help level out investment levels between larger and smaller firms alike across all sectors in coming years.
