Harrison Ford moved to the verge of tears while accepting his honorary Palme d’Or at Cannes this week. The actor was overcome with emotion as he spoke before the premiere of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, his last film in which he plays the beloved adventurer.
Ford has portrayed Dr Henry Walton “Indiana” Jones Jr since 1981 when Raiders Of The Lost Ark first hit cinemas, making him an iconic figure among moviegoers around the world. He reprised his role in three further films – Temple Of Doom (1984), Last Crusade (1989), and Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull (2008).
At Cannes, Ford said that playing Indy had been a “great adventure” over four decades but it was time to say goodbye: “I am proud to have been part of this character’s journey,” he said tearfully. “It has meant so much to me.”
The audience responded with rapturous applause as they celebrated both Harrison’s career and also their love for Indiana Jones – a character who will live on in our memories forevermore!
