Google, one of the world’s leading tech companies, has reportedly halted construction on its giant San Jose campus. The project had been in development for several years and was set to become a major hub for Google employees. However, due to job cuts caused by the pandemic-induced economic downturn, Google is said to have stopped all work on the site.
The news comes as a blow not only to those who were looking forward to working at this new location but also those involved in building it up from scratch. Construction workers are now left without jobs and businesses that had contracts with Google will be affected too. It’s estimated that around $1 billion worth of investments were made into this project before it was put on hold indefinitely – another sign of how much damage Covid-19 has done across multiple industries worldwide.
It remains unclear when or if construction will resume again; however many local residents hope that once conditions improve economically then so too will progress towards completing what could have been an iconic landmark in Silicon Valley history – albeit one built during difficult times indeed!
