Judy Blume, the renowned author of beloved children’s books, such as “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret,” recently responded to comments she made about fellow author J.K. Rowling to make her support for the trans community clear.
Blume said that while she respects Rowling’s right to express her opinions, “I want everyone in the trans community to know I see you, hear you, and love you just as you are.” She went on to say that it is important for people everywhere—especially those with a platform—to be open and affirming of all gender identities and expressions without exception or qualification.
In addition, Blume shared an article from GLAAD (formerly known as Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) titled “How To Be An Ally To Transgender People” which outlines ways in which allies can advocate for transgender rights including speaking up when hearing anti-transgender language, or jokes; educating oneself about issues facing transgender people; standing up against discrimination based on gender identity; amplifying stories from within the trans community; supporting organizations dedicated to protecting transgender rights like GLAAD itself among many other things.
By taking this stance, Judy Blume has shown us how we can all take actionable steps towards creating a more inclusive world where everyone is accepted regardless of their gender identity or expression.
