In a recent statement, the UK’s terrorism watchdog has warned that rogue Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems could potentially be used to recruit terrorists in the future. The chairman of this organization, Max Hill QC, believes that AI technology is advancing at such a rapid rate and is becoming so sophisticated that it could soon be used for nefarious purposes.
Hill also warned about potential ‘dark web’ sites being created by AI-controlled bots which are designed to target vulnerable individuals who may have an affinity for extremist ideologies or terrorist activities. He stated: “We must not ignore the possibility of malicious actors using artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques to identify potential recruits.”
The risk posed by these types of technologies was further highlighted when Hill pointed out how easy it would be for criminals or terrorists to use social media algorithms as well as facial recognition software to locate targets and spread their message more effectively than ever before. This means they can reach far larger audiences with much greater efficiency than traditional methods allowed them previously.
Hill concluded his speech with a call to action urging governments around the world to take steps now to prevent any misuse of AI technology before it’s too late: “It’s essential we act swiftly if we’re going combat this growing threat”.
