Mike Krumholz, a 21-year-old college student, has been left with permanent vision loss in his left eye after an infection caused by sleeping in contact lenses. The parasite that infected him was Acanthamoeba keratitis (AK), which is a rare but serious condition that can cause blindness if not treated quickly.
Krumholz had worn contact lenses for several years without any issues until he started to experience pain and redness in his eyes earlier this year. He visited the doctor who diagnosed him with AK and prescribed medication to treat it; however, due to the severity of the infection, he may never fully regain sight in his left eye again.
This story serves as an important reminder of how dangerous it can be to sleep while wearing contacts or other types of corrective eyewear without proper care and maintenance. Contact lens wearers should always follow their optometrist’s instructions on cleaning their lenses properly before each use, as well as avoiding sleeping or swimming while wearing them altogether if possible. If you are experiencing any signs of discomfort such as redness or pain when using your contacts then make sure you visit your optometrist immediately for diagnosis and treatment options so you don’t end up like Mike Krumholz – blind from something that could have been prevented!
