TikTokker Melissa Ray recently faced backlash over a video she shared about Spanish architecture in Mexico. In the video, Ray detailed her trip to Oaxaca and expressed her admiration for the buildings she encountered there. However, many users quickly pointed out that these structures were a product of colonization – something which has had devastating effects on Mexican culture and society for centuries.
The response from other TikTokkers was overwhelmingly negative as they voiced their frustration at how colonization continues to be romanticized without any acknowledgment of its damaging consequences. Many people argued that colonialism is still very much alive today, with some pointing out how it has led to inequality between Indigenous communities and those descended from colonizers in Mexico specifically.
Ray’s post sparked an important conversation about the lasting effects of colonialism around the world – one which should not be overlooked or ignored if we are ever going to move forward together as a global community. We must recognize our history so that we can work towards creating more equitable societies free from oppression for all people regardless of race or ethnicity moving forward into the future.
