A brand new, untouched Boeing 747 passenger jet which was meant to be heavily modified for luxury travel by wealthy Saudi Arabian royalty has been scrapped after just 16 flights. The aircraft had been purchased from US-based aviation company Xtra Airways in October 2018 and was expected to undergo a complete interior overhaul before being put into service.
However, the project never came to fruition due to financial constraints and the plane remained unused until it was finally dismantled at an airport in Arizona earlier this year. It is believed that the cost of refurbishing the jet would have exceeded $20 million, making it unviable for its intended purpose.
The decommissioned aircraft has now become another statistic among many other large planes that are no longer used or flown anymore due to changing global economic conditions and technological advances within the aviation industry as well as rising fuel costs leading airlines towards smaller fleets with more efficient engines instead of larger ones like Boeing 747s.
