The Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl LVII win was sealed with a controversial holding penalty that drained the final seconds from the Philadelphia Eagles’ comeback effort. With just over two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, and down by five points, it appeared as though the Eagles’ defense had done enough to get one more possession against their opponents. However, on third-and-six at midfield, an apparent phantom holding call dashed their hopes of a miraculous victory.
Replays showed no evidence of any contact between either player involved in what would become known as “the hold heard round the world.” The penalty resulted in an automatic first down for Kansas City which allowed them to run out most of the clock before kicking a field goal and sealing their 31-28 victory.
The NFL later admitted that they had made an incorrect call on this play but due to rules preventing officials from overturning calls during games, it could not be reversed or corrected resulting in much debate about how fair such rulings are when so much is riding on each game’s outcome. Regardless of opinion, however; this single play will forever remain part of Super Bowl history and serve as yet another reminder of why football is America’s favorite sport!
